“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7
A less confusing why of phrasing that is: what is the motivation behind your actions? As humans we are impressed by people’s actions, we like to see people do good things. God likes to see people do good things as well, but His focus is not on those actions alone it’s on the motivation behind them.
God looks at our hearts; He is the only one that knows what is inside each and every one of our hearts. It’s not just about what we do but why we do it. Are you motivated to go out and help people because you love Jesus and want to share that love with others? Do you live your life differently from the world because God has called you to live as faithful and pure and you want to obey Him in every way? Or are you helping people to make yourself feel good? Are you living different from the world to show you are better or because you are a Christian and that is just what Christians do? Are you still going out of your way to help someone when no one is around to see it? Are you still saying no to temptation when you are alone and no one would ever possibly know?
God calls us to live a life of integrity, that’s faithfully serving Him always in every situation out of genuine love for Him. Even Jesus, while on this earth, did not do the things He did for Himself but because He was carrying out the Father’s will.
Why do you do what you do?
